Composition of the drug

The main active ingredient of Essentiale is soy phospholipids - these are special substances that help rebuild the cell wall of the liver, because with cirrhosis, liver cells are severely destroyed.

Further, the work of enzymes that help remove harmful substances from the cat’s body is disrupted, and the ability to restore, so-called regeneration, of cell membranes is also reduced.

In addition, such essential phospholipids help get rid of cholesterol and have a general healing effect, relieving your pet’s body of intoxication.

Essentiale for cats – instructions for use, dosage – Website about pets

Essentiale for dogs is a drug that protects liver cells from destruction and promotes their regeneration. Prescribed for pets with hepatitis of various etiologies and cirrhosis. It has long established itself as one of the best hepatoprotectors. They began to use it in “human” medicine, and only then did it come to veterinary medicine.

What is

Essentiale is a complex of phospholipids obtained from soybeans. Available in injection form and in capsules, which have slightly different compositions.

In addition to phospholipids, the solution contains deoxycholic acid and riboflavin, which also have a hepatoprotective effect. Benzyl alcohol and sodium hydrochloride are included as excipients.

The capsules contain castor oil, solid fats, and extracts obtained from soybeans. These substances regulate stool and cleanse the dog's intestines of toxins, which is very important for liver diseases.

Those that are included in essentiale are completely identical in the structural features of a dog’s liver.

They exhibit greater biological activity than conventional endogenous substances, as they contain many polyunsaturated fatty acids. They are embedded in the membrane of liver cells, preventing their destruction and stimulating regeneration.

As a result, the level of enzymes in the blood decreases, the liver begins to cope with its tasks, and the dog feels good. The drug improves the detoxification function of the liver, the process of protein and urea synthesis in this organ.

Due to the regeneration of hepatocytes, fibrotic changes in the liver are reduced. This prevents the development of cirrhosis in dogs.

The components of Essentiale Forte help normalize the condition of bile and prevent the formation of stones. They also affect the overall metabolism in the body.

When is the medicine prescribed?

  • Acute and chronic hepatitis
  • Toxin damage
  • Cirrhosis
  • Fatty organ degeneration
  • Changes in the liver associated with heart pathology in old dogs
  • Prevention of lesions during treatment with toxic drugs (anti-inflammatory drugs, long-term antibiotic therapy, chemotherapy, recovery after surgery).

Side effects from the use of Essentiale are rare. Some dogs may be allergic to the components of the medication, rash, or itchy skin. Sometimes gastrointestinal disorders are observed - vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite.

What are the contraindications to the use of the medicine? It is not allowed for pregnant or lactating dogs, puppies under two weeks of age.

How to give

Prescribe medication according to the dog's weight. Dosage – 0.2-0.5 ml/kg. The drug is administered intravenously for 5-10 days, once a day. If the situation with the dog is very difficult, you can do it twice.

Diluted in glucose or dextrose. Saline solutions are not used for dilution. Then they switch to taking capsules.

They are prescribed 2-3 times a day. Dose for small dogs – ¼, medium – ½, large – 1-2. The course of treatment is from two to four weeks. Can the medicine be given longer?

Since it has few side effects, longer courses are also used. The maximum period for taking Essentiale is 6 months. But the decision to continue therapy must be made by the veterinarian.

In addition, it is recommended to take breaks between courses so that the liver activates its own reserves and regeneration processes. How much does Essentiale cost and where can you buy it?

The drug is sold in both veterinary and regular pharmacies. It is very popular, so finding it will not be a problem. Injections, 5 pieces per package, cost approximately a thousand.

Capsules of 30 cost about 600-700 rubles, 100 - around 2000. The difference in price can be from 100 to 300 rubles per pack.

Pharmacology Essentiale N

Pharmacological effects – hepatoprotective, cytoprotective.

Pharmacodynamics of the drug Essentiale N

Essential phospholipids

represent the main structural elements of the cell wall and membranes of intracellular organelles. In liver pathology, damage to the cell membranes of hepatocytes and their organelles always occurs. This phenomenon is called hepatocyte cytolysis syndrome, which is biochemically manifested by an increase in the activity of alanine and aspartic transaminases in the blood serum. This syndrome causes disruption of the activity of enzymes and receptors, leading to a deterioration in the structural and functional state of hepatocytes. Their ability to regenerate is also reduced.

Phospholipids included in

, are completely consistent in their physicochemical structure with endogenous phospholipids. The activity of essential phospholipids is significantly higher, which can be explained by their higher content of polyunsaturated fatty acids. The above-mentioned high-energy molecules are integrated into defective areas of the membranes of the cell wall of liver cells, which helps restore the integrity of hepatocytes and stimulates their regeneration. The cis-double bonds of the polyunsaturated fatty acids that make up the composition neutralize the parallel arrangement of hydrocarbon chains in the phospholipids of cell membranes, while the structure of the phospholipids of the liver cell membranes “looses,” which leads to an increase in their elasticity and fluidity. Thanks to this, metabolism in hepatocytes significantly improves.

Essential phospholipids, which are the active ingredient of Essentiale, in the body of humans, dogs and cats have a regulating effect on the metabolism of lipoproteins by transporting cholesterol and neutral fats to the sites of their oxidation. This pharmacological effect of essential phospholipids is associated with an increase in the ability of high-density lipoproteins to conjugate with cholesterol.

The cardioprotective properties of Essentiale have been described in humans, dogs and cats.

The drug has a normalizing effect on:

  • on detoxification, urea-synthesizing, protein-synthesizing functions of the liver
  • on the preservation and restoration of phospholipid-dependent enzyme systems and the cell wall of hepatocytes, which inhibits the formation and proliferation of fibrous connective tissue in the liver
  • metabolism of proteins and lipids
  • due to the release of phospholipids into the bile, the lithogenic index is significantly reduced, which leads to the stabilization of bile and the prevention of cholelithiasis

Pharmacokinetics of Essentiale

In the body of humans, dogs and cats, phosphatidylcholine enters hepatocytes, and it is conjugated with high-density lipoproteins.

The half-life of the choline component is about 66 hours, and the polyunsaturated fatty acids are about 32 hours.

Indications for use of the drug Essentiale N

According to the instructions for use of the drug Essentiale in humans, dogs and cats, the following indications are established:

  • liver cirrhosis, acute and chronic hepatitis, hepatocyte necrosis, hepatic precoma and coma, toxic or drug-induced hepatitis
  • cardiohepatic syndrome (cardiac liver fibrosis, congestive liver)
  • hepatocardial syndrome (myocardial dysfunction due to primary hepatic pathology)
  • fatty liver (particularly in diabetes mellitus)
  • toxicosis of pregnancy
  • hepatocyte cytolysis syndrome
  • post- and preoperative therapy, in particular during operations in the area of the liver, gallbladder and ducts
  • radiation syndrome
  • psoriasis

Effect of the drug and indications for use in dogs

The drug has a pronounced effect:

  • improves the antitoxic function of the liver;
  • normalizes metabolic protein and fat processes;
  • protects and activates liver enzyme systems;
  • restores liver cells and inhibits the proliferation of fibrous tissue;
  • stabilizes bile levels and prevents cholelithiasis.

Essentiale forte improves liver function and stabilizes bile levels.
Essentiale Forte is prescribed to dogs for any disorders of the liver: chronic, acute, drug-induced, toxic cirrhosis; hepatitis; fatty liver; pre- and postoperative therapy.

Method of using essentiale in humane medicine and its dose to humans

The drug is used in the form of intravenous injections. It is undesirable to inject this drug intramuscularly, which is due to the development of local reactogenic reactions (the drug irritates soft tissues and causes an inflammatory reaction). The standard dose of Essentiale for humans is 5–10 ml (1–2 ampoules). For severe forms of hepatopathy, use 10–20 ml (2–4 ampoules) per day. The contents of 2 ampoules (10 ml) can be administered intravenously at a time. The drug can be used twice a day. It is strictly forbidden to mix essential phospholipids in the same syringe with other medications. It is recommended to dilute the drug with the patient’s blood in a 1:1 ratio (using autologous blood).

If necessary, the drug is diluted with only a 5-10% glucose solution, and the diluted drug solution should be transparent throughout the entire time of intravenous injection.

It is strictly forbidden to dissolve the drug with electrolyte solutions (isotonic nitride chloride solution, Ringer's solution, etc.).

It is recommended to supplement intravenous administration with oral forms of the drug as quickly as possible.

The drug is also used orally. Capsules of the drug must be swallowed whole and washed down with a sufficient volume of water (about 200 ml).

For adults and adolescents over 12 years of age, take 2 capsules 3 times a day with meals. The duration of use of Essentiale is not limited (determined by the attending physician).

Instructions for use and dosage of the drug
