The behavior of a cat when you need to achieve something. For example, open a jar, a door. Animal curiosity. How a cat reacts to changes in the owner’s mood. You can find various tests on the Internet to determine the IQ of cats, but their results do not correspond to reality. Cats are animal spirits. After running the tests several times, different results are obtained. Each cat is smart in its own way and has its own preferences. Only its owner, who observes the animal’s actions in various natural situations, can evaluate a pet’s intelligence.
What is the intelligence of a cat?
Which cats are smarter: purebred or mongrel cats – you can argue. But there is a difference in intelligence between individuals of different breeds.
The smartest cats are found in ancient breeds. Why exactly these representatives are somewhat smarter than others is not known for certain. The intellectual abilities of cats could develop in the process of evolution and long-term natural selection, but at the same time, cats could always be so smart that the population could survive to this day.
There are no tests that can be used to identify the smartest cats among all individuals. To understand how developed a certain cat’s intelligence is, it is enough to watch him for some time, communicate and play.
Norwegian Forest Cat
Smart animals can:
- Respond not only to a nickname, but also to another address spoken with a certain intonation. At the same time, they will approach a gentle call faster than an imperative shout - they may not hear it at all;
- Learn to sharpen your claws only in a special place;
- Go to the toilet in the tray. Some pets even prefer to use the toilet, as a person does, and they master it on their own;
- React quickly to danger - run and hide in case of an unusual or unexpected situation;
- Biding your time to get your way, and this doesn’t just show up in mouse hunting. Smart, enterprising cats can sit quietly in a corner of the kitchen and wait for the owner to leave for a minute, and then quickly and quietly steal a piece of meat. Or wait until no one is home to play with soft toys in the children's room;
- Remember where the owner hides the little thing he likes, and then for a long time and patiently try to open the door of the cabinet with his paw. And many cats succeed in this;
- Accustom your owner to feed him from the table, while making a pitiful appearance and touching his leg with a soft paw;
- Wake up the owner in the middle of the night if he suddenly wants to eat or gets bored;
- Distinguish between the owner’s mood and even health status;
- Choose your own owner and, in some way incomprehensible to us, influence our subconscious so that we take the cat into our home.
Siberian cat
There are many examples of smart actions and they can manifest themselves differently in each individual. In many ways, a pet's intelligence depends on its living conditions. Those cats who live in a warm place, do not need anything, but at the same time no time is given to them, no one trains or talks to them, intelligence may be somewhat lower than that of cats with active owners.
The mind and memory of cats can develop, especially in the first years of life, regardless of breed or gender.

This is also a breed that constantly and loudly expresses its opinion about what is happening. He may show aggression if, for example, he is afraid of strangers.
Maine Coon

Maine Coons are self-confident, get along well with children, and are not aggressive towards strangers. Selkirk Rex

American Shorthair
This is a spectacular creature with a square muzzle, expressive eyes, a muscular body and thick, silky fur. Shorthaired Pointers are excellent mouse catchers; they were brought to America on ships, where they helped sailors by thinning out the rodent population.
It is precisely because of its strong hunting instinct that the shorthaired pointer will turn your house into its hunting ground, study it up and down, reaching, if necessary, to the ceiling. And he will proudly ignore your persistent attempts to stop him.
They can damage furniture with their claws and love to throw objects, ignoring attempts by their owners to wean them off.
Sphinxes
Today, Sphynxes are recognized as the smartest cat breed. They love to pose and arouse the admiration of others with their persona. They love to play hide and seek and chase, and are not afraid of the main feline enemies - dogs. Easy to learn simple tricks. These animals will do anything to be petted and held, loved and respected. If they spoil something in the house, it is most likely out of revenge, although these cats are very kind, which cannot be said from their harsh reality. These cute animals certainly understand what is said to them. Sometimes it seems that these are aliens from outer space or other worlds.
They are so attached to their owner that they are ready to spend hours looking at him with loving eyes and touching him with their paws, checking if he is here, licking him with a rough tongue, showing unprecedented care. These are incredible creatures that can brighten up the life of a lonely person and a large family. And one can only marvel at their intelligence!
Exotic Shorthair
The round muzzle, round eyes and flat nose of these funny creatures do not give the impression of genius.
In character they resemble Persians, except that they are livelier and do not require such coat care.
This is a companion breed - it is always willing to make contact and loves to play, and remains cheerful until old age. But exotics don’t like to sit on their knees and hands.
Exotics are gentle creatures, not curious and preferring to avoid unusual and unfamiliar places, circumstances and creatures, and are therefore often considered stupid and funny. In fact, they are rather timid.

A whole group of cats took second place. Most of the breeds in this group are derived from the Siamese breed. The only exception in this group is the Bengal cat. It should be remembered that Siamese are very active creatures, so scientists make the assumption that the higher the activity of a cat, the higher its intellectual level. There are seven breeds of cats in this group, of which five are those who had Siamese in their family (Balinese, shorthaired color point, Javanese, shorthaired oriental, Havana brown), the Siamese itself and the Bengal kitty. The latter have well-developed intelligence and ingenuity, which are entirely subordinate to the hunting instincts of the Bengals.

Third place in the intellectual cat hit parade is occupied by a completely diverse group of cats of 13 breeds:
