Home veterinary first aid kit for cat owners

Zantac instructions

Zantac belongs to the group of antiulcer drugs, histamine H2 receptor blockers.
The action lasts half a day. Available in the form of coated tablets (300 mg and 150 mg), effervescent tablets (capsules of 300 mg and 150 mg), solution for injection.

The active ingredient is renitidine.

Excipients: methylhydroxypropylcellulose, triacetin, magnesium stearate, titanium dioxide.

According to the instructions, the drug successfully blocks histamine receptors. The medication has the ability to reduce the secretion of hydrochloric acid, directly reducing the content of pepsin. When taking Zantac, pepsin activity decreases by increasing the acidity of the stomach contents.

Additional funds

Additional products in themselves are not therapeutic, but the first aid kit should contain:

  1. Lidocaine
  2. Saline solution (in ampoules)
  3. Water for injection (ampoules)
  4. Vaseline oil.
  5. Postoperative blanket.
  6. Plastic collar.

Lidocaine, saline, water for injection are solvents for the preparation of parenteral dosage forms. For example, antibiotic injections.

Vaseline oil is a very mild laxative. Used for constipation.

The postoperative blanket is designed to secure dressings, as well as to protect sutures after medical operations.

The plastic collar prevents scratching and licking of wounds, burns, and surgical sutures. It has the shape of a truncated cone, does not interfere with the cat’s eating, and does not cause disorientation in space due to its transparency.

Size No. 7 is suitable for a kitten, size No. 10 is suitable for an adult cat.

Indications for use Zantac

Indications for starting Zantac therapy are: stomach and intestinal ulcers (benign); damage caused by NSAID use; stomach ulcers caused by stress or surgery; erosive and reflux esophagitis; chronic dyspepsia; peptic ulcers; bleeding in the gastrointestinal system.

There are a number of contraindications to the use of the drug: sensitivity to the components of the drug, age less than 12 years. Use during pregnancy and lactation is not recommended, as Zantac can pass into milk and pass through the placenta.

Under the supervision of a specialist, the drug is taken with caution by persons with kidney and liver diseases (failure and others), acute porphyria, and cirrhosis of the liver.

Side effects

During the entire existence of Zantac, the following side effects were observed: headache, bradycardia, tachycardia, blurred vision, dizziness, depression, myalgia, confusion, arthralgia. Less commonly seen: diarrhea, vasculitis, hepatitis, reversible pancreatitis, pancytopenia, agranulocytosis, interstitial nephritis. Sometimes allergic reactions occur.

Zantac may mask stomach cancer. For this reason, before starting treatment, people with a stomach ulcer or if new symptoms of dyspepsia occur should exclude malignancy.

Interaction

The drug does not affect the action and metabolism of amidopyrine, barbiturates, steroid hormones, meprobomate, antihistamines and phenothiazines. Therefore, when treating peptic ulcers, Zantac should be preferred when taken simultaneously with the listed drugs.

Specific drugs

Specific drugs are used for a highly specific purpose and are purchased as needed:

  1. Eye ointments and drops.
  2. Tetracycline, erythromycin ointment.
  3. Drops Iris, Tsiprovet.
  4. Ear ointments and drops.
  5. Ear lotion.
  6. Drops Otibiovin, Amit.
  7. Anti-flea drugs.
  8. Shampoos.
  9. Collars.
  10. Drops.
  11. Sprays.
  12. Hair removal paste.

Eye ointments and drops

Eye ointments and drops are used for conjunctivitis, keratitis, and eye injuries.

Ear ointments and drops

Cats very often become infected with ear scabies. To prevent otodectosis, it is enough to treat your ears with a special lotion once a week.

Most veterinary ear drops have a complex effect: anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, acaricidal.

Anti-flea drugs

Advice! Anti-flea shampoos do not provide long-term protection. To reliably rid your cat of external parasites, use drops or sprays, and for prolonged action, use collars.

Hair removal paste

The papillae on a cat's tongue are curved and directed toward the pharynx. While licking itself, the cat is forced to swallow hairs. In the stomach, the hairs form into a tight ball (trichobezoar), which is not digested and is not removed from the gastrointestinal tract on its own. The hairball gradually enlarges, causes intestinal obstruction and can be fatal.

This is interesting! Malt-Soft hair removal paste prevents the formation of trichobezoars and, by improving peristalsis, promotes the removal of hair from the intestines. It does not dissolve hairs - only concentrated sulfuric acid can do this!

Zantac tablets use

The standard dosage prescribed for adults is 150 mg 2 times a day, respectively in the morning and in the evening at the same time.

If there is a duodenal or gastric ulcer, or with reflux esophagitis, it is possible to increase the dose by 2 times at night. The effectiveness of the drug is not related to food intake. For various ulcers, recovery time is usually up to 4 weeks. First, a short course of treatment is carried out; if the result is successful, a maintenance dose is administered - 150 mg at bedtime.

Therapy for reflux esophagitis consists of taking 150 mg 2 times a day, or 300 mg at bedtime, treatment duration is 8 weeks.

The initial dosage for Zollinger-Ellison syndrome is 150 mg 3 times a day, if necessary, the dosage can be increased.

For chronic episodic dyspepsia, the dosage is 150 mg 2 times a day, the duration of treatment is up to 6 weeks.

As a prophylactic measure, to eliminate bleeding in severe patients from stress ulcers and to prevent recurrent bleeding, injections are replaced with tablets, at a dosage of 150 mg 2 times a day after transferring patients to enteral nutrition.

Patients with the possibility of developing acid aspiration syndrome are given 150 mg 2 hours before the introduction of general anesthesia. It is recommended to take 150 mg in the evening the day before anesthesia.

During childbirth, women are prescribed 150 mg at the beginning of labor and a similar dose every 6 hours.

Clinical studies of the use of Zantac tablets in childhood are too small. But there is information about the successful use of the drug in children 8-18 years old, 150 mg 2 times a day.

Overdose does not cause serious consequences.

The price of Zantac varies from 80 to 200 hryvnia.

Tools

A set of tools that a first aid kit for a cat should contain:

  1. Blunt curved scissors.
  2. Anatomical tweezers.
  3. Electronic thermometer.
  4. Pipette – 2-3 pcs.
  5. Syringe 100 ml.
  6. Disposable syringes (2, 5, 10 ml) – 5 pcs.

Scissors

Blunt scissors with curved ends are designed for cutting hair around a wound, cutting dressings and other manipulations.

Tweezers

Anatomical tweezers differ from surgical ones in that they do not have toothed elements at the end of the working part. Necessary for draining abscesses and fistulas.

Thermometer

Body temperature is a complex indicator of health status. Normally, for an adult cat it is 38.6-38.8 C o, for kittens it is slightly higher, up to about 39.5 C o. It is more convenient to use an electronic thermometer to measure temperature. It is safer than mercury and allows you to measure temperature very quickly, literally within one minute.

This is interesting! It is wrong to think that hairless breed cats have a higher body temperature than woolly breeds! They simply have higher heat transfer, and the temperature is the same as that of a regular Murka.

Pipette

A medical pipette is designed for instilling medicinal solutions into the eyes, nose or ears. It is advisable to have several of them in your veterinary medicine cabinet - separately for eye, intranasal and ear drops for cats.

Syringe

A syringe is needed to perform a cleansing or therapeutic enema. In addition, it is convenient for washing wounds and irrigating them with medications.

Syringes

Using a syringe, medications are injected into the cat’s body parenterally, i.e. by injection.

Advice! Learn in advance from your veterinarian how to give subcutaneous and intramuscular injections (intravenous injections at home are excluded).

Advice! Do not use insulin syringes - they have a very short needle that does not allow the drug to be administered either subcutaneously or intramuscularly.

Reviews about the drug

I am a veterinarian with extensive experience (more than 20 years). I can say with confidence that no analogue of Zantac copes with the problem so quickly and with virtually no side effects. Moreover, the drug can really be used at different stages of the disease and not only for cats.

This drug literally saved our cat!
Our Murka suffered from stomach ulcers for quite a long time until our veterinarian recommended Zantac. In just two days the bleeding stopped and I had a good appetite. Olga, owner of a Persian cat

General information about first aid kits for cats

A first aid kit is a complete item in which medications, tools and other emergency items are stored. You can buy it ready-made at a veterinary store, or make it yourself. As practice has shown, the second option is more rational. The cat owner can provide a home first aid kit himself, taking into account the breed of the pet. At the same time, he will arrange medications and medical items in a way that is convenient for him.

Handy items can be used as a home first aid kit. For example: cardboard boxes or plastic containers. The main thing is that they have lids, clean and voluminous.

Before starting to assemble a cat first aid kit, the owner needs to understand that it will only serve to provide first aid. You cannot treat animals yourself. Prevention and therapy to eliminate symptoms or other dysfunction of the pet should be carried out by a veterinarian. After all, sometimes even the most harmless medications, without specific knowledge of their use, can cause great harm to the animal, even to the point of death.

The location of a first aid kit for a cat must be taken seriously. It should be in an easily accessible, but at the same time safe place. However, it should not be placed in areas with high humidity, close to heat sources or direct sunlight.

pharmachologic effect

Pets differ from people in having a weaker digestive system. Despite its lower susceptibility to various viral and bacterial diseases, its imperfection manifests itself in frequent gastric imbalance and other disorders. Systematic digestive disorders require an immediate response from the owners, most often with the help of a veterinarian.

Zantac is a drug from the category of second-generation antiulcer drugs, which is used to successfully treat a whole list of gastric disorders.

Its action is based on reducing the production of excess gastric juice , which is carried out by blocking H2 histamine receptors. This effect is especially important for peptic ulcers and other digestive problems, which are accompanied by increased production of gastric juice.

Zantac is quickly absorbed into the stomach walls and accumulates in cellular structures. The maximum concentration of the drug in the body is observed fifteen minutes after application. Use with food is permissible, since it does not affect the absorption of the main components of the drug.

Excretion from the body is carried out through the kidneys while maintaining the original state, but the drug is partially metabolized in the liver.

Contraindications and side effects

There are not many contraindications to taking Serenia, so this drug is often prescribed by veterinary specialists. You cannot give medicine:

  • pregnant cats, since the effect of its active substance on the fetus has not been studied;
  • kittens under the age of four months;
  • in case of individual intolerance to the active component.

Side effects of Serenia manifest themselves in the form of allergic reactions, which are easily relieved with the help of antihistamines.

Dosage calculation

Before you start treating your pet, it is important to carefully study the instructions for Zantac for cats. The correct dosage is always based on the weight of the animal . In the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases (including during acute periods), the following calculation formula is used: per 1 kg of animal weight, from 1 to 3 milligrams of the drug in the form of a tablet and from 1 to 2 milligrams of the drug in the form of an injection solution are used.

However, you should not treat the animal yourself without contacting a veterinarian. Only a doctor can calculate the required amount of the drug, having thoroughly studied the whole situation. In addition, self-administration of Zantac can lead to an overdose and side effects.
