Often, pet owners are faced with various behavioral problems of the latter. Cats that are naturally willful, but happily get along with people, may suddenly begin to show aggression. In fact, nothing happens for nothing, and if a cat attacks a person, then there are reasons for it. The owner of the animal can install them, but quite often only a veterinarian can do this, so do not put off going to the veterinary clinic. Especially in cases with a sharp change in the cat’s behavior.
Types of aggression
There are different cases due to which one cat can become aggressive, while the other remains calm. In veterinary medicine, such a condition of a pet is classified into the following varieties, presented in the table:
View | Peculiarities |
Pathophysiological | This aggressive behavior is more common in cats than others. |
It is a consequence of a pathological process or internal injuries, as a result of which the pet experiences severe pain when touched by a person
The kitten not only shows aggression, but also makes trouble in the house and refuses to contact the owner
Protective | If an animal attacks guests or another cat, this may be a defensive reaction |
The female behaves aggressively when she has newborn cats
Owners are advised to first find out what the pet is trying to protect itself from.
A cat may be perceived as a threat to its own body when actively pressed by its owners, held by force, and in other cases.
Idiopathic | This type of aggression in cats occurs in rare cases. |
It manifests itself as sudden changes in the pet’s behavior, as a result of which it becomes angry and cases of attacks on humans become more frequent
This form of aggressive behavior is established if another reason for the change could not be found out. |
Meow loudly, especially at night
Cats are nocturnal animals, which means that they are most active at night. They want to hunt, run and play. Cats sleep all day long, and at night they upset the whole house with their meows so that they get attention. Sometimes they may yell at a stray animal outside to leave, or call for mating if the animal is not neutered. Cats also meow if you haven’t removed their litter box or if you forgot to add food. To prevent your pet from disturbing your sleep at night, just before going to bed you need to play with your pet properly so that it doesn’t have the strength to play pranks.
Why do cats attack people?
Teasing games used to amuse a kitten can develop into aggression when the pet becomes an adult.
It often happens that one cat bites another or shows aggression in a different way. To find out the causes of the violation, it is recommended to contact a veterinary clinic. Veterinarians note that some breeds of the cat family already have a gene responsible for predatory aggression. The most aggressive cats include Siamese cats, Maine Coons and jungle cats. A pet can bite or become aggressive for a number of reasons:
- Children's habits. Often, owners like to play with the animal so that it rushes and attacks a person’s hand or leg. In adulthood, it is difficult to wean an animal from such games.
- Defending your territory. Every cat is an owner, who often rushes at a stranger if he tries to encroach on his property.
- The appearance of kittens. The female becomes aggressive after the birth of the babies, showing maternal instinct. Owners should not touch them for several weeks after the kittens are born.
- Manifestation of fear. If a cat has bitten another cat or shown aggression towards it, this may indicate severe fright. With a mild degree of fear, the animal tries to hide, but as the unpleasant feeling grows, the cat hisses and attacks.
- The influence of children. If there are kids in the house who like to squeeze their pets by the ears and tail, then soon the cat can transfer all the negative emotions to adults.
- Overexcitement. Prolonged stress or psycho-emotional stress can result in aggression in cats.
Other possible reasons
Often, during the period of manifestation of the disease, the animal experiences pain, so when trying to pet it, it attacks.
Aggressive behavior in a cat occurs when it is hunting. A cat can rush at a person under the influence of other factors, such as:
- Diseases of various types. When a pet is sick, it often causes pain, which can cause it to become aggressive. Mechanical injuries can also affect changes in an animal’s behavior.
- Hormonal imbalance in the cat's body. The problem arises after the use of certain drugs with hormones, as a result of which the cat rushes at the person.
- Kitten teething. During this period, your pet's gums become swollen and painful, as a result of which he often chews on something to relieve the condition.
- Manifestation of character. If a cat attacked a person, then perhaps she did not like some of his actions towards her.
A pet may attack its owners after its claws have been trimmed, because in this way it is trying to avoid a repeat procedure. At the same time, his defensive reaction automatically switches from scratching to biting at the level of instincts.
They're climbing everywhere
Cats love high places. This gives them a sense of security and allows them to observe everything that is happening around them. In addition, they navigate by smell. When a cat climbs onto furniture, even if it is not very high, it leaves its scent. One way to correct this behavior is to install some shelves so your cat can climb on them, leaving your furniture alone. Make sure the shelves are aligned in such a way that your pet can jump from one to the other.
What to do?
If there are several cats living in the house, then to prevent them from biting each other, the owners need to educate them and monitor changes in behavior. If a pet starts lunging at a person, there may be several reasons, so it is recommended to consult a veterinarian. If aggressive behavior occurs on the part of a pet, do not tease it further. If there are other pets in the house, then it is worth protecting them from aggression. It is not recommended to have pets with a wayward character if you have children. If aggression manifests itself in a cat during pregnancy and after birth, then it is worth leaving the animal and kittens alone for a while. In this case, nothing needs to be done and soon the females’ maternal instincts will weaken and the level of aggression will decrease.
If a cat is attacked by an outside male, then a person should not help them deal with it by pouring water on the animal or driving it away. In this case, it is only possible that the manifestation of aggressive behavior will worsen, as a result of which the pet is able to rush at the owner. To prevent such behavior in adulthood, a kitten should be taught from early childhood that damaging furniture in the house and biting and scratching its owner during play is prohibited. If a pet rushes out due to fear or overexcitement, then it is worth comforting, petting and cuddling it. If aggression is severe, the animal is isolated for several minutes or hours in a separate room or carrier.

Mexico, 2020. A surveillance camera captured the moment a cat brutally attacked a man. A video distributed on the Internet shows a man walking when a cat suddenly pounces on him, grabs his leg and bites him.
At the very beginning of the cat's attack, the gentleman falls to the floor and starts kicking him to escape from the animal, which constantly scratches and does not want to let him go.
Another man who was present during the incident tried to protect the man with a chair and hit the cat with it, but also hit the victim several times.
Moments later, when the situation was a little more under control, the same man punched the cat several times, and the victim of the attack grabbed him by the scruff of the neck and managed to get rid of him.
Although it was initially reported that the victim was the mayor of Culiacan, Jesus Estrada Ferreiro, this news was later denied. Additionally, the video originally appeared on YouTube in 2020, but it recently went viral again as fake news.

Russia, October 2020. A Moscow man faces up to five years in prison for using a cat as a weapon to attack a police officer, Russian media reported.
The suspect, identified as Gennady Shcherbakov, reportedly shook and threw the cat when a police officer approached him in a city apartment building.
An officer who was responding to noise complaints from residents was "seriously scratched" in the face. 59-year-old Shcherbakov has been charged with using violence against a government official.
The case was opened on October 30, more than a year after the incident, the Baza telegram channel reports.
What supposedly happened? According to Russian broadcaster Ren TV, on October 4, 2020, Shcherbakov was sitting at the base of the stairs in a residential building in the Russian capital. He was allegedly very drunk.
Residents reported disturbances, but when a police officer met Shcherbakov near the stairs and asked him to stop disturbing public order, he refused to cooperate or answer any questions, Ren TV reported. After that, Shcherbakov grabbed his cat, which was next to him, and threw it at the officer. According to the investigation, he grabbed her at the withers, which angered the animal and forced her to release her claws. The animal reportedly grabbed the officer's face with its claws digging in.
Shcherbakov, who was not a resident of the apartment building where the incident occurred, denies using the cat as a weapon and claims it jumped on the officer of its own free will.
The case was filed under Article 318 of the Criminal Code, which deals with the use of violence against a public official. It is unclear why it took a year to open a criminal case or what happened to the cat.

They rub against you when you come home
As mentioned earlier, cats live by smell. If the house is filled with their own scent, they are happy. To achieve this, cats rub against things to leave their scents. They have smelly pockets all over the place, and when they rub things (quite often your feet), they leave a smell. When you leave home and then return, you pick up odors from everywhere you go. Your cat will check and then re-mark you with her own scent.
Your pet can also smell another cat, even if you accidentally touched a bush where the animal previously left its mark. You don’t feel this because humans, unlike cats, do not have such a keenly developed sense of smell. Therefore, when your cat sniffs you, he actually smells a foreign odor and tries to get rid of it in this way.

Showing belly
Cats live by instinct whether they are in the safety of a home or outdoors. By keeping the most vulnerable areas protected, they remain safe. If your cat feels comfortable around you, she may often show her belly to show her trust. If you try to touch her belly, be careful because some cats may scratch or bite.
Possible reasons
When a cat is afraid of people, and even more so of its own owners, it is advisable to immediately understand the reasons for such fears. A cowardly pet is unlikely to bring joy, peace and tranquility to the home. Moreover, these reasons can range from banal temperament to various complexes.
Negative experience
If you adopted a cat from the street or from a shelter at any age, he may be carrying a heavy burden of the past. Unfortunately, there are many people in the world who, to put it mildly, do not have a humane attitude towards animals. Street purrs adapt rather slowly to home conditions. They are often frightened by open doors, loud noises behind the wall or outside the window. That is why their breeders should be patient, not put pressure on the psyche of the new pet and try to earn his trust.
Scared cat
Punishment as a method of education
Under no circumstances should you hit, spank, swing, or shout at your furry pets.
Remember, if you have tamed a cat, you automatically become responsible for it. Under natural conditions, these animals undergo natural selection, so any manifestation of aggression causes a response. It can be expressed either in the manifestation of cowardice or aggression. To prevent this, do not hit, but stroke the purr, take care of it.
Feeling insecure
Fear of a cat often indicates his lack of self-confidence. To correct this situation and give him a feeling of confidence, you should try:
- make the tallest objects in the premises accessible; kitchen set, wardrobe, etc.;
- place a bowl of food and water higher from the floor so that the furry one feels a sense of superiority over the residents of the house or apartment and their guests;
- install a structure that will look like a tree so that your mustachioed pet friend can climb freely on it.
Pet house
Lack of personal territory
Cats are animals that in any case need their own territorial space. In houses and apartments, they always choose the safest place for rest - a closet, a box, a drawer with clothes, etc. It is for this reason that, having decided to get a cat, it is advisable to think through a house for it in advance and install it so that it is inaccessible to strangers , children and other pets. If you do not do this, along with cowardly behavior, he will eventually begin to show aggression, throwing himself at his owners and their guests. Of course, it is advisable to let cats outside, since they walk on their own, but doing this in a city environment is at least not safe.
Complexes
Most often, animals that have found a family at a very early age experience complexes towards unfamiliar guests. Kittens that have been in a family for a long time, which has not been visited by strangers, begin to hide or scratch at the first visit of a stranger. This reaction is especially evident if he takes the kitten in his arms to cuddle or stroke it. In such situations, when some celebration with an abundance of guests is expected, it is advisable to close the cat in a separate room, not forgetting to provide him with bowls of water and food.
