FELIGEN RCP (FELIGEN CRP) vaccine with solvent against calicivirosis, rhinotracheitis and feline panleukopenia

The Feligen cat vaccine, manufactured by Virbac, is widely used in veterinary practice. The veterinary drug is prescribed for prophylactic purposes against panleukopenia, calicivirosis and rhinotracheitis. Creates stable immunity in the animal to the main dangerous viral infections for 20 days after vaccination. The cat's resistance to diseases lasts for 1 year, after which it is necessary to vaccinate again. The Feligen vaccine is considered safe, but does not show a healing result. The drug is contraindicated for pets during pregnancy or feeding kittens.

Feligen CRR/R

vaccine for the prevention of calicivirus infection, viral rhinotracheitis, panleukopenia and feline rabies
(developer organization: Virbac SA, France)

Trade name: Feligen CRP/ R (Feligen ® CRP/ R).

International nonproprietary name: vaccine for the prevention of calicivirus, rhinotracheitis, panleukopenia and rabies in cats.

Dosage form: dry component (Feligen CRP) - lyophilisate for the preparation of suspension for injection (live vaccine) and liquid component (Feligen R) - suspension for injection (inactivated vaccine).

The Feligen CRP/R vaccine is made from attenuated strains of feline panleukopenia virus (strain LR 72), calicivirus (strain F9) and herpesvirus type 1 (strain F-2) reproduced in cat lung cell culture (AKD), with the addition of excipients: potassium dihydrogen phosphate – 0.556 mg/dose and lactose monohydrate – 109.2 mg/dose.

The dry component (Feligen CRP) in appearance is a homogeneous dry porous mass of white color, the liquid component (Feligen R) is a colorless liquid with a white precipitate that forms a homogeneous suspension when shaken.

Feligen CRP is packaged in 1 cm 3 (1 immunizing dose for cats), liquid component (Feligen R) in 1 ml (1 immunizing dose for cats) in glass bottles of appropriate capacity, hermetically sealed with rubber stoppers, reinforced with aluminum caps and sealed with plastic seals.

Vials with vaccine and solvent are packaged in plastic boxes of 10 bottles of each component.

Each box of vaccine contains instructions for its use.

The shelf life of the vaccine is 24 months from the date of release, subject to storage and transportation conditions.

After the expiration date, the vaccine is not suitable for use.

The vaccine is stored and transported in the manufacturer's sealed packaging, in a dry place, protected from light and inaccessible to unauthorized persons, separately from food and feed, at a temperature of 2°C to 8°C.

Freezing of the vaccine is not allowed.

The vaccine is stored in places inaccessible to children.

Vials with a vaccine without labels, with a violation of the integrity and tightness of the closure, subjected to freezing, with a changed color, consistency, containing foreign impurities, after the expiration date, and also not used within 2 hours after dissolution, are subject to rejection and disinfection by boiling for 15 minutes.

Disposal of decontaminated vaccine does not require special precautions.

II. Biological properties

The vaccine causes the formation of an immune response in vaccinated cats to rhinotracheitis, calicivirus infection and panleukopenia 21 days after repeated administration (re-vaccination), lasting at least 12 months.

One immunizing dose of the Feligen CRP vaccine contains at least 105.0-106.6 TCD50 of herpesvirus type 1 (strain F-2), 104.6-106.1 TCD50 of calicivirus (strain F9), 103.7-104.5 TCD50 feline panleukopenia virus (strain LR 72).

The vaccine is harmless and has no medicinal properties.

The vaccine is intended for the prevention of rhinotracheitis, calicivirus infection and panleukopenia in cats.

It is prohibited to vaccinate clinically sick and/or weakened animals.

Contraindicated for use in cats during pregnancy and lactation.

10 days before vaccination, it is recommended to carry out preventive deworming.

Cats are subject to vaccination starting from 3 months of age. The Feligen CRR/R vaccine is administered subcutaneously into the scapula area, in a volume of 1 ml (1 immunizing dose) per administration, regardless of weight and breed. Revaccination is carried out after 3-4 weeks in the same volume (without the rabies component).

In the future, animals are vaccinated annually, once, with one dose of vaccine.

Before use, add 1 ml of solvent into the vaccine vial using a sterile syringe and mix thoroughly until the dry mass is completely dissolved. All manipulations are carried out in compliance with the rules of asepsis.

The effectiveness of immunization may be reduced if animals exposed to stress are vaccinated.

No symptoms of rhinotracheitis, calicivirus infection, feline panleukopenia or other pathological signs have been identified following an overdose of the vaccine.

In rare cases, the vaccine may cause an allergic reaction. In this case, the use of the drug is stopped and symptomatic treatment is carried out.

Violation of the schedule (timing) of vaccine administration should be avoided, as this may lead to a decrease in the effectiveness of immunoprophylaxis for rhinotracheitis, calicivirus infection and feline panleukopenia.

If the next dose of vaccine is missed, immunization should be carried out as soon as possible.

When using the vaccine in accordance with these instructions, there are usually no side effects or complications. In exceptional cases, an anaphylactic reaction is possible, in which case symptomatic treatment is carried out.

It is prohibited to use the Feligen CRP/R vaccine in combination with other immunobiological drugs, as well as antiviral drugs and corticosteroids. The use of drugs from these groups is permitted no earlier than 14 days before or after the administration of the Feligen CRP/R vaccine.

The timing of possible use of animal products after the introduction of the Feligen CRP/R vaccine has not been established.

IV. Personal prevention measures

When working with the Feligen CRP/R vaccine, you should follow the general rules of personal hygiene and safety precautions provided for when working with medicines.

All persons participating in vaccination must wear special clothing and be provided with personal protective equipment. People with hypersensitivity to the components of the drug should avoid direct contact with the Feligen CRP/R vaccine. Places of work must have a first aid kit.

If the vaccine gets on the skin and/or mucous membranes, they must be washed with plenty of clean water. In the event of a vaccine spill, contaminated surfaces must be treated with a 2% alkali solution or a 5% chloramine solution. If the drug is accidentally administered to a person, the injection site must be immediately treated with a 70% ethyl alcohol solution, contact a medical facility and inform the doctor.

How do they do it?

Adhere to specific rules. The doctor must be dressed in special clothing and have sterile gloves on his hands. The injection is given at the withers. You need to hold the cat's paws tightly so that it does not harm itself or others. If the animal is too excited, the limbs must be tied with special straps to the table. If the vaccine gets into your mouth or eyes, they should be rinsed immediately with cold water.

According to experts in the field of veterinary medicine, the Feligen vaccine provides pets with reliable protection against major dangerous diseases, which, if the animal does not have immune protection, can lead to death. Prevention against viruses is impossible without vaccinations.

general description

The manufacturer offers two vaccine options: CRP and CRP/R. The latter is distinguished by the additional introduction of a rabies component into the composition. A single dose for each option consists of two vials:

  • lyophilisate (dry component) – a porous white mass of uniform consistency with live viruses, intended for preparing a suspension;
  • solvent (liquid component) – a colorless transparent liquid.

The components are placed separately in glass bottles with a volume of 1 cm3 and 1 ml, respectively. Sealed packaging is ensured by the use of rubber stoppers, with an aluminum cap and a plastic seal on top. Vials along with instructions for use are placed in plastic containers of 10 or 50 doses.

The drug is suitable for use within 24 months from the date of production, subject to proper storage conditions: in places with a temperature of 2-8 ° C, protected from moisture and direct sunlight. Even short-term freezing makes the vaccine completely unusable. It is also prohibited to vaccinate with a drug without labels, with foreign impurities, or with compromised integrity or sealing of the packaging.

Vaccine composition

According to the instructions, the components are as follows:

  • lyophilized, including attenuated calicivirus;
  • herpesvirus type 1;
  • panleukopenia virus.

It also contains additional elements: lactose monohydrate, potassium dihydrophosphate and, in the form of a solvent, injection water. “Feligen CRP” promotes the development of immunity in healthy animals to calicivirus, rhinotracheitis, panleukopenia, and protects against rabies. The effect of the injection lasts for 1 year. It is safe, but has no healing qualities.

The vaccine is produced in a glass ampoule. It is sealed and tightly closed with a stopper. The dry component involves a colorless liquid mixture - solvent and dry snow-white powder. The drug can be stored for 2 years from the date of manufacture in a dry place at a temperature of 3-9 degrees Celsius.

The vaccine should absolutely not be frozen.

Operating principle

Feligen is intended to form an immune response in cats to the viruses of panleukopenia, rhinotracheitis, calicivirus and rabies. The action in the body begins 14-21 days after revaccination and provides protection for 12 months or more.

The drug belongs to the category of “live vaccines”, which, due to the content of weakened live viruses, remain effective only when maintaining the recommended temperature storage conditions. After entering the body, viruses multiply and stimulate the vaccine processes necessary for the formation of immunity to these diseases.

The effect of the drug is due to the content of weakened viruses of these diseases grown on cat lung cells. This manufacturing method provides the maximum preventive effect for these pets. Each immunizing dose contains strains:

  • herpesvirus type 1 (F2) – at least 105-106.6 TCID50/ml;
  • calicivirus (F9) – not less than 104.1-106.1 TCID50/ml;
  • panleukopenia (LR 72) – at least 103.7-104.5 TCID50/ml;
  • rabies (VP12 Pasteur, min. 1 IU) – only for the Feligen CRP/R vaccine.

Lactose monohydrate, potassium dihydrogen phosphate and water for injection are used as auxiliary components.

Feligen as an antiviral vaccine

Feligen is a foreign veterinary product produced by the French company Virbac SA. This drug belongs to the group of live antiviral vaccines and is widely used by domestic veterinarians.

Feligen-CRP is produced by a French pharmaceutical company

On the modern market of veterinary drugs you can find two types of this vaccine:

The Latin letters in the name of any vaccine indicate the diseases against which immunity is formed after the animal is vaccinated. So, C - calicivirosis, R - rabies, P - panleukopenia.

The Feligen vaccine is an over-the-counter veterinary product that is used only for preventive purposes . The use of this vaccine as a medicine is inappropriate.

Mode of application

The use of Feligen is permitted only in clinically healthy individuals no earlier than the 8th week of life, but 3 months of age is considered optimal. All animals are given the same dose, regardless of individual characteristics (age, breed, etc.).

Important! Before administering the drug, a preliminary examination of the animal by a veterinarian is required. Detection of health problems should be grounds for canceling vaccination.

First, a solvent is injected into the vial with the “live” vaccine through a sterile syringe and the contents are mixed until the components are combined into a homogeneous suspension. For the injection, the subcutaneous method of administration is chosen in the area of the scapula. If the contents are not used within two hours after mixing, the solution becomes unsuitable for vaccination and requires disinfection by boiling for 15 minutes.

Vaccination is carried out twice with a 3-4 week interval, but the second time a drug without a rabies component is selected. In the future, annual administration of a single maintenance dose is required to maintain the effect.

Features of application

Before vaccination with Feligen, it is important to consider the following features:

  1. 10 days before vaccination, your pet must undergo preventive deworming.
  2. The effectiveness of the vaccine may decrease when used in animals against the background of stress.
  3. Accidental overdose does not cause signs of infection with panleukopenia, rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, rabies or other pathological symptoms.
  4. Failure to comply with the timing of vaccination may lead to a decrease in its effectiveness. If missed, it is recommended to get vaccinated at the first opportunity.
  5. After Feligen, the use of other immunobiological, corticosteroid and antiviral drugs is allowed at least 14 days before or after vaccination.
  6. The appearance of a pea-sized swelling at the injection site is considered normal and goes away without additional measures within 21 days.
  7. Despite the fact that the animal’s immunity is formed within 14-21 days, in case of upcoming travel by air or rail, revaccination is recommended no later than 30 days before the departure date.

Safety precautions for vaccination

When using the Feligen vaccine for cats, certain safety rules must be followed. Despite the fact that live viruses in the vaccine are not dangerous to humans, like the killed rabies virus, you should not neglect the recommendations.

When vaccinating your cat, you need to wear thin clothing that can be easily washed if necessary (if Feligen solution has been exposed to it). It is advisable to wear medical gloves on your hands.

The drug is administered to the cat subcutaneously in the withers area. In order to prevent the animal from scratching the one doing the vaccination, it is necessary to attract an assistant who will hold the cat, preventing him from biting and scratching. In the absence of an assistant, it is convenient to vaccinate a cat by putting it in the sleeve of a thick jacket, from which it will be difficult for him to stick his paws out.

If the dissolved Feligen vaccine gets on the mucous membranes, they must be immediately washed with plenty of cool water.

Contraindications and side effects

A strict contraindication to the use of Feligen for cats is intolerance to the drug by the animal’s body. In addition, vaccination is not allowed if:

  • illnesses, upcoming operations or the recovery period after them;
  • general weakened state of the body;
  • period of pregnancy and lactation in females;
  • treating the animal with other antiviral and immunobiological drugs or corticosteroids.

If the instructions for use are followed, the use of the vaccine usually does not cause complications or adverse reactions. In rare cases, individual allergic manifestations to the constituent components are possible; if these occur, you should stop using the vaccine and carry out symptomatic treatment.

You can buy Feligen for cats in veterinary pharmacies or online pet stores. The drug requires strict adherence to transportation and storage conditions, so for purchase you should choose only trusted places with a good reputation. The price of a single dose of CPR or CRP/R is from 364-380 rubles.

Owner reviews

We became the owners of a weakened kitten six months ago, but all this time we were busy restoring his health. Just a few days ago I was vaccinated with Feligen at the veterinary clinic. The kitten hardly ate, but drank well and slept a lot. The vaccination was done in the morning, by the evening Murlik had noticeably perked up, the next day he also behaved as if nothing had happened, there were no problems with the toilet. I don’t regret choosing this particular product.”

Nina, cat and cat owner:

“I vaccinated my cat family with Feligen. Everything went well, the pets behaved as usual, no lethargy was observed. It’s too early to talk about effectiveness in our case, but judging by the reviews of friends, the vaccine works well.”
