Release form and composition
The medicine is available in several versions:
- For small dogs and puppies, elongated white tablets are sold.
- For young cats and kittens, beige-brown elongated tablets with beveled edges are produced.
- White round tablets are intended for adult dogs.
- For adult cats, the medicine is red in color and slightly elongated in shape.
The main active ingredients of the drug are praziquantel and milbemycin oxime. These substances effectively destroy most types of worms that infect the body of pets.
Milbemax also includes:
- povidone;
- microcrystalline cellulose;
- sodium croscarmellose;
- lactose monohydrate.
Drug selection criteria
If helminths are suspected, take the dog to the veterinarian. He will examine the pet, take feces to determine the type of worms and, based on the tests, select a medicine with a suitable pharmacological effect.
This is what the ideal choice of anthelmintic drug looks like. But in practice, 90% of animal owners go to the first pet store or pharmacy they come across and ask for something for worms. This is where the criteria for choosing medications will come in handy for owners. Take into account:
- the weight of the pet – the dosage depends on it;
- age – medications are produced only for adult dogs, for puppies from 2, 3, 6 or 8 weeks;
- presence/absence of allergies to components;
- date of manufacture of the product;
- how the packaging was stored, is it intact?
It is advisable to know the type of pathogen. Each drug contains specific active ingredients that work against some types of helminths, but are useless against others. Basically, manufacturers of anthelmintic medications use 3 components:
- praziquantel – against flat and tapeworms;
- pyrantel – effective against nematodes, has little or no effect on whipworms and tapeworms;
- febantel – helps against roundworms and hookworms;
- febantel + pyrantel – against whipworms.
However, most owners do not submit their pet's feces to the laboratory - and without a test it is impossible to find out the type of worms. Therefore, I advise you to take a broad-spectrum medication, which contains praziquantel, pyrantel and febantel.
When is the use of the drug indicated?
There are a number of symptoms, when detected, anthelmintic drugs, in particular Milbemax, are indicated:
- problems with stool;
- the animal fidgets on its butt;
- there is difficulty swallowing;
- dermatitis appears;
- the animal feels sick, vomits;
- the fur becomes dull and falls out;
- profuse salivation appears;
- the animal becomes apathetic;
- There are traces of worms or their larvae in the feces.
If the owner detects these signs, you need to take the animal to the veterinarian or give Milbemax yourself according to the instructions.
Indications for use
Pharmacists classify Drontal for cats as a combination drug. It is poisonous to roundworms and tapeworms. Under its influence, many varieties of worms die: Toxocara, Mesocestoides, Ancylostoma, Echinococcus, Dipylidium and others. The extended spectrum of action of the anthelmintic determines its use for the purpose of removing and preventing helminthic infestation. Veterinarians prescribe Drontal for cats for nematodes (toxocariasis, toxascariasis, hookworm) and cestodoses (tenidosis, dipylidia, echinococcosis, mesocestoidosis).

Instructions for use
Milbemax tablets are used once, together with food. It is necessary to ensure that the animal eats the tablet. Otherwise, the medicine is placed on the root of the tongue, after which the animal's mouth is compressed until it swallows the tablet.
Before using Milbemax, you should carefully read the dosage. If it is exceeded, the animal may be poisoned.
Before vaccination, the animal must be wormed a couple of weeks before the intended vaccination. As a preventive measure, Milbemax tablets should be given to your pet every 90 days.
To cure an animal of worms, Milbemax should be given once every 7 days for a month. As soon as the summer season begins, deworming must be carried out. Also, your pet should be treated for worms every month until the end of the season.
Pharmacological properties
The medication belongs to the group of macrocyclic lactones, which have antibiotic activity against helminths. The instructions for use also indicate that the use of milbemax for dogs allows you to launch an additional process - enhanced enzymatic activity, which is destructive for parasites.
Milbemycin oxime entering the body increases the permeability of chloride ions, causing irreversible changes leading to paralysis and death of foreign organisms. Praziquantel acts on the same principle, but increases the permeability of calcium ions, which affect the mechanism of muscle contraction.
The active ingredients of Milbemax are excreted from the body in the urine within two days.
The active ingredients are excreted unchanged along with physiological fluids, mainly urine, within two days. The maximum accumulation of active substances in the blood plasma is observed after 1–4 hours.
Contraindications for use
The use of tablets unnecessarily loads the urinary system, so it is not recommended to give Milbemax to weakened animals. There are also other restrictions.
Taboo on taking the drug:
- individual intolerance and hypersensitivity;
- infectious diseases;
- 2 weeks or less lifespan;
- liver and kidney disorders;
- weight less than 500 grams.
The drug is also not recommended for use by certain breeds - collies, shelties, bobtails. When testing the product on animals of these breeds, intolerance to macrocyclic lactones was revealed. It is allowed to prescribe Milbemax for large dogs, but the dosage in this case is strictly observed in the concentrations specified in the instructions.
Important. For dogs bearing puppies, the medication is given with extreme caution, which requires the supervision of a veterinarian.
List of indications for use
Helminthic infection is the main indication for the use of the drug, however, Milbemax does not affect all, but certain parasites. The drug is prescribed for nematodes and cestodes, as well as in the presence of these two varieties in the animal’s body (with mixed helminthic infestation).
The main indication for the use of Milbemax is helminthic infestation.
Most species of cestodes die after consumption, from Dipylidium caninum to Trichuris vulpis. In order to prevent dirofilariasis, it is allowed to give medication at intervals of 30 days.
Another advantage of the product is that there is no need to go on a starvation diet or prescribe laxatives before using the product.

Review of anthelmintic drugs for dogs
Medicines for worms are produced in 3 main forms: tablets, suspensions and drops. Some companies produce original medicines in the form of gels, pastes, sugar cubes, others mask the bitterness with flavorings and aromas.
Variety is needed so that animals can eat anthelmintics without problems. Some dogs spit out the pills, others drool when the suspension is administered, and still others refuse medications disguised as treats. Which product is right for a particular dog is determined by trial and error.
Deworming tablets
Tablets are a popular and common type of anthelmintics. When given correctly, this is the best option: they cannot be partially spat out as a suspension or gel, but the capsules begin to dissolve and act at their “destination” - the intestines.
"Drontal Plus"
Capsules are produced in 2 forms - 10 kg and 35 kg. Both types contain praziquantel, pyrantel and febantel, meat flavoring agents. The difference is in dosage.
"Drontal Plus" is effective against Giardia, tapeworms and roundworms. The anthelmintic does not cause side effects, including overdose. However, it is forbidden to give it to people with individual intolerance, pregnant women, babies under 2 weeks old or weighing less than 2 kg.
A package of 2 tablets will cost 290-350 rubles for a dosage of 10 kg and 550-600 rubles for a dosage of 35 kg.

What is the best deworming remedy for dogs?
From everything presented in the rating, it is difficult to make a choice in favor of one thing. Each nominee is distinguished by its composition, speed of action, and good results in the fight against common pathogens of invasion. To avoid making a mistake when deciding what to buy for your pet, VyborExpert experts recommend consulting with a veterinarian privately. The following comparative analysis results will also help:
- Milbemax is a highly regarded drug that is widely used in veterinary medicine;
- Milprazone is a highly effective and well-tolerated drug;
- Prazicide is a remedy that has been proven over the years and does not require fasting;

In this case, it will be easier to find a suitable composition with 100% results. If this is not possible, the owner of a four-legged friend can use the universal options from the presented review.
Side effects
If the medicine is used correctly and the dosage is followed, no side effects are observed.
If you give an animal a little more of the drug than it should, it may experience increased salivation, depression, loss of coordination, body tremors, and muscle paresis. These symptoms will go away on their own within 24 hours.
If your pet has an individual intolerance, an allergy may develop. In this case, the dog is prescribed antihistamines.
Side effects and overdose
The manufacturer notes that Drontal for cats, in terms of its effect on health, belongs to the category of low-toxic substances: according to GOST 12.1.007-76, this is hazard class 4. Therefore, this anthelmintic is well accepted by outbred and purebred cats of different ages, including older kittens. In experiments and practice, no carcinogenic, teratogenic, mutagenic, embryotoxic, or sensitizing effects on the body have been recorded.
If the recommended dosages and contraindications are followed, Drontal rarely causes serious side effects. However, some individuals may develop symptoms of poisoning. This occurs for two reasons. The first is exceeding the therapeutic dosage for the cat. The second is intoxication of the body due to the release of harmful substances during the decay of the dead bodies of worms. Side symptoms are diarrhea, salivation, vomiting, apathy. These unpleasant phenomena are not signs of a serious illness and pass quickly.
If signs of poisoning appear, it is necessary to give the cat an adsorbent (Polysorb, Enterosgel, charcoal) and show it to the veterinarian

Reviews
Reviews about Milbemax, the instructions for use of which you read above, are mostly positive. Pet owners note the high effectiveness of the drug and the small size of the tablets, thanks to which the animal eats them with food.
However, some dogs and cats, especially small ones, have to be force-fed the drug. Some crush the tablet and give it along with water or liquid food.
One of the disadvantages is also the high cost of the medicine, but this is due to its effectiveness. This medicine is recommended by both breeders and veterinarians.
Rating of deworming products for dogs
Treatment of worms in dogs should be carried out strictly according to the specified rules from the doctor or the manufacturer's instructions. Only in this case is it possible not only to eliminate parasites, but also to prevent secondary infection. - The weight of the dog - based on this parameter, a safe but effective dosage is selected;
- Age – degree of concentration for a puppy, an adult;
- Efficiency – against whipworms, flat or tapeworms, insects, etc.;
- Toxicity – degree of probable harm, risks of adverse reactions;
- Restrictions – contraindications for use specified in the instructions;
- Effect – speed of action, shelf life of the results obtained;
- Purpose - only treatment, treatment and prevention.
The expert rating includes nominees with the best ratio of price, efficiency, and quality. The emphasis was on those agents to which infectious agents are not capable of developing resistance. Taste and smell were assessed so that the animal did not refuse to take medications. Customer reviews helped identify the strengths and weaknesses of each candidate for the top list.
The best flea drops for dogs
Reviews of the drug from dog breeders
Anastasia. A very good product that my dachshund eats without any problems (I just combine it with a piece of meat and give it to the dog). She did not take any other medications, I don’t know why, perhaps there was some specific smell. There were no problems with Milbemax. Now I give it only for the purpose of prevention.
Lyudmila. I have been feeding my Dalmatian with these anthelmintic tablets, just in case, in the fall and spring for three years now (the dog is 8.6 years old). Allergic reactions are observed very rarely, but if my pet’s ears itch, which are a kind of indicator of a problem, then I give antihistamines. A few drops of Zodak into the sausage, and it is full of life again.
Andrey. Dirofilariasis was successfully cured as soon as larvae were discovered in the dog’s blood. Now we accept mosquitoes during the summer.
How to give
According to the instructions, Milbemax in the recommended therapeutic dosage is given to the dog once, preferably on an empty stomach or immediately after eating. Place the medicine on the base of the tongue, close the pet’s mouth with your hand, stroking the dog’s neck until a swallowing reflex appears.
Advice! In case of severe infestation by worms, if a single dose does not help, Milbemax is given to the pet four times with an interval of 6-7 days in the same dosage.
Milbemax can also be crushed into powder and mixed into porridge, minced meat, and other pet food. You can add it to water and pour it into the mouth behind the cheek with a small syringe, a syringe without a needle.
Veterinarians about Milbemax for dogs
Georgy, veterinarian. I have been treating dogs for a long time, so I know which anthelmintic drugs should be prescribed and which ones should not.
Veterinarians note that Milbemax can cause an allergic reaction in a dog.
I consider Milbemax to be in the “average” class, since a quarter of pets begin to experience allergies, so they then have to prescribe antipruritics. Additional costs somewhat reduce the benefits of use, so I immediately warn clients about possible additional expenses beyond the norm in the future.
Vasily Anatolyevich, veterinarian. I work in a veterinary hospital, and often dogs and puppies are brought to me that are infected with parasites. Milbemax proved to be very effective: after the dog took it, all signs of helminth damage disappeared quite quickly, while when treating with other medications it was necessary to increase the duration of administration. The first dose destroys the worms, and after 2 weeks a new course is required to kill the eggs. Milbemax fights both helminths and eggs, so there is no need to torment the animal with two doses of an anthelmintic drug. I will continue to prescribe it, because the product is currently considered one of the most advanced.
