Composition and release form of the drug
The main active ingredients of the drug are synthetic hormones (analogues of the natural hormones estrogen and gestogen) ethinyl estradiol and acetobumedone. The latter has an effect on the pituitary gland, preventing the production of follicle-stimulating (FSH) and luteinizing hormones (LH). Ethinyl estradiol changes the internal structure of the uterus and the structure of the endometrium.
The drug Contrasex regulates sexual heat in cats.
Available in the form of a solution, packaged in special dropper bottles, 3 ml in volume, or in the form of tablets, 10 pieces in a blister. Both the bottle with the solution and the tablets are packaged in cardboard boxes with an instruction insert. Additional substances in the tablets are milk sugar, starch, calcium stearate and dye. Soybean oil, flavoring and coloring are added to the drops.
General description and properties
Acetobumedone interferes with the production of FSH and LH, hormones responsible for the formation of follicles in the ovaries and their subsequent ovulation. Ethinyl estradiol (artificial estrogen) is a female sex hormone that, in large quantities, can change the structure of the uterus and make vaginal mucus more viscous. And this, in turn, prevents sperm from penetrating into the uterine cavity, reduces their motility and prevents the fertilized egg from settling in the endometrial layer.
Both ethinyl estradiol and acetobumedone are quickly absorbed in the intestine, processed in the liver and completely excreted from the cat’s body in urine within two days.
Indications for use
The drug Contrasex (drops and tablets) is used to reduce sexual activity in cats, delay or prevent the period of estrus in cats. It has a pronounced contraceptive effect, eliminates unwanted pregnancy. In addition, the drug regulates the behavior of the animal, reduces anxiety and aggression during the period of sexual hunting (estrus).

Instructions for use and dosage for cats
The drug should be given only at the very beginning of the cat’s estrus or sexual activity in the cat. There is no point in using it later - it will not help. The dosage depends on the weight, age and gender of the animal. For cats weighing up to 5 kg, 4 drops of Contrasex once a day, an hour before meals, is enough. If we are talking about the tablet form, then give one tablet once a day.
It is recommended to give cats weighing from 5 to 10 kg 6-8 drops or 2 tablets, with the same interval. For cats whose weight does not reach 5 kg, the dosage will be 8-10 drops per dose or 2 tablets, and for cats weighing up to 15 kg - 12-15 drops or 3 tablets. The course of treatment for cats will be 3-4 days, and for cats – 4-5 days.
To consolidate the effect, the instructions for use recommend extending the use of the drug for another day. If more than 2 days have passed since the start of estrus, then Contrasex cannot be used. It is also not worth using it more than 2 times a year, as this can lead to dire consequences. As a preventive measure, you can give the medicine once every 2 weeks, 4 drops per dose.
General information
The result is complete suppression of arousal and the impossibility of pregnancy. The drug is excreted from the liver in a few days along with urine, the general condition improves, and the symptoms of aggression and anxiety decrease. If the drug is discontinued, reproductive function is restored within 3-4 months. Contrasex is suitable for cats, male cats, and female dogs.
The drug is produced in 2 forms: drops (3 ml bottle), and tablets (10 pieces). Acetobumedone prevents the production of hormones responsible for the formation of follicles and subsequent ovulation. Ethinyl estradiol is a hormone, a large amount of which changes the uterine structure and prevents the penetration of sperm into the uterine cavity.
The hormonal drug “Contrasex” in both forms is sold in cardboard packaging, each with instructions. It states that it makes sense to give the drug at the very beginning of a cat’s sexual activity or the cat’s estrus. Using it later won't do anything. The dosage indicates that it depends on weight, age and gender.
For a five-kilogram cat, 4 drops per day once before meals (an hour and a half before it) will be enough. Or one tablet according to a scheme similar to drops. If the cat's weight is between 6-10 kg, double the dose. In this case, the reception also remains one-time. The course of using “Contrasex” is up to days. Cats require more drops and tablets, with a weight within 5 kg - drop 8-10 drops or 2 tablets, over 6, but less than 15 kg - 3 tablets or 12-15 drops.
Give the drug for up to 5 days. To consolidate the effect of the drug, you can give it one more day; it is not recommended to use contrasex more than 2 times a year. Prevention can be carried out according to the scheme of 4 drops every two weeks. You cannot give a cat “contrasex” for more than one and a half years. No drug overdoses have been identified.
Contraindications in the instructions include cats that are nursing, pregnant, with pathologies of the uterus, mammary glands, acute and chronic diseases. With prolonged use of Contrasex, there is a risk of endometritis, pyometra, formations, both benign and malignant, in the mammary glands and uterus.
Side effects and contraindications
Contrasex should not be given during pregnancy and lactation, as well as to cats suffering from diseases of the genitourinary system (urolithiasis, etc.), diabetes. Do not use the drug for small kittens that have not reached puberty. Long-term use of hormones is fraught with such dangerous consequences as breast cancer, pyometra, endometritis.
Important. In order not to harm the animal, you must strictly adhere to the instructions, and use the drug only as prescribed by a veterinarian.
If you are hypersensitive to any of the components of the drug, an allergic reaction may occur. Sometimes there is an increase in appetite, excess weight, and changes in behavior.
Dosage and method of administration
The drug is used in male and female cats to regulate sexual heat and associated undesirable behavior (aggression, territory marking, increased excitability, etc.). The drug is administered orally, dripping into the mouth or onto a treat. The dosage depends on the animal’s body weight and the purpose of use (see the table on the back of the instructions).
CounterSex Neo® drops for cats and dogs are contraindicated in animals that have not reached puberty, with neoplasms of the genital organs, diabetes mellitus, urolithiasis and individual intolerance to the components of the drug. I hate to think about it, but I myself became an indirect cause of my cat’s death. The cat was of “noble” origin, with good heredity and no congenital health problems. If there were no hormonal drugs in her life, with a high degree of probability she would have lived several more years beyond her 14th birthday. Forgive me, my dear, if you can...
