Royal Canin daily food. Advantages and differences from analogues

Where is it produced?

What should an animal owner pay attention to when choosing food for him? Some look at the price, others at the bright packaging, but most look at the composition and manufacturer.

Russian feed is considered to be of poor quality, unlike foreign ones. Which food is better - Proplan or Royal Canin, if you rely on the manufacturer? According to experts:

  1. Pro Plan is manufactured by the American company Purina. Factories are located in France, Italy and Russia.
  2. Royal Canin is a French food. Production plants are located in Poland, France and Russia.

Range

In general, the situation with cat food of these brands is similar to the situation in the dog food market. The range of Royal Canin cat foods significantly exceeds the range presented in the Hills and Purina Pro Plan lines.

Purina has the smallest amount of food and, as a consequence, its least tailored to the special needs of cats. Although this manufacturer also has diets for domestic, obese, sterilized and sensitive cats, as well as food for maintaining beautiful coats and healthy skin. Hills has added food to the line that helps remove hair from the digestive tract and keeps the animal's mouth clean. Royal Canin is significantly ahead of its competitors in this criterion, as it has diversified its line of foods for outdoor/active cats, fluffy and long-haired cats, and cats with sensitive digestion. The line also includes diets for the prevention of urolithiasis and milk powder for kittens.

Composition of Pro Plan food

What to choose for your pet: American (Proplan) or French-made Royal Canin? We invite you to familiarize yourself in detail with the composition of Pro Plan, using food for adult cats as an example:

  1. The first word listed on the packaging is “chicken.” The percentage of its component is 21.
  2. Wheat is in second place, and dried poultry protein is in third place.
  3. The fourth and fifth lines are occupied by rice and wheat gluten.

Now let’s take a closer look at each product included in the food in question.

Feed classes, what are they?

Owners of cats and dogs, speaking about the quality of food, very often use definitions of their classes.
The same terms are used in their practice by veterinarians, breeders, pet store sellers and other pet business specialists. Although classes of feed have become firmly established, these definitions are very conditional. There are no standards in the industry that determine the “class” of feed and their division into “super premium”, “premium”, “economy” and others, not only in our country, but throughout the world. No manufacturer is required to clearly indicate the grade of food on the packaging or on the official website, and most do not.

And you certainly won’t find food anywhere that says “economy class” on the packaging. It turns out that public opinion classifies the same product into different classes - it all depends on private opinion or on personal interest, for example, online stores or the manufacturers themselves. This is how myths about feed classes are born - let's see how much truth there is in them.

On our resource you can find an article about feed classes. In it we provide a summary table of the characteristic features of ready-made food and the true features of each class to make it easier for you to navigate, since this spontaneous classification is still firmly rooted in the minds of consumers.

Detailed analysis of the composition

Chicken is a dietary product that is good for cat health. The question just arises: what is hidden under this word? According to American standards, chicken includes offal, skin, bones and feathers. Therefore, it remains a mystery what is in Pro Plan food: real meat or industrial waste. Veterinarians note that the amount of chicken is negligible and does not reach the level of super-premium food.

Now about wheat, its percentage component is not indicated. Wheat is a source of carbohydrates, but its place in the feed composition is alarming. A cat is a predator; the first three lines in dry food should be occupied by meat products. Wheat is not one of these; it is a cheap and filling filler. It is suitable for economy-class products, but hardly for food that claims to be super-premium.

Poultry protein powder contains proteins. Again, its quantity in the composition is not indicated. Rice is another source of carbohydrates. Too many carbohydrates for a complete cat diet. The manufacturer replaced the natural meat component with them.

Wheat gluten contains plant protein. The key word is plant-based, let’s take that into account. Based on the above, the conclusion is drawn: the food does not correspond to a super-premium product. It contains too many plant proteins and carbohydrates. Veterinarians rarely recommend the product to cat owners.

Let's analyze the composition of French food to find out which is better: Proplan or Royal Canin.

Detailed comparison of Royal Canin and Proplan feeds

To obtain an unbiased comparative characteristic, we will consider the range and composition of diets, the feeding rates recommended by the manufacturer, as well as the average cost of products. To ensure fair competition, we will divide each criterion into several blocks, since the quality of food for cats and dogs may differ.

Assortment of food "Proplan" and "Royal Canin"

Both manufacturers produce many varieties of food. Among the products offered, you can find special diets for small, medium and large dogs, adult and elderly animals, representatives of different breeds, etc. There are veterinary and preventive varieties.

The range of Pro Plan food is narrower than that of Royal Canin, but this is not always a disadvantage

Personally, I believe that unless there are health problems or special needs, this criterion can be ignored. Many manufacturers produce 2-3 types of food for animals of all ages. In nature, for example, both kittens and adult cats eat the same thing. In the case of the premium segment, this division is due to the fact that babies require more animal proteins and fats, which means the composition must be better than other foods, since the latter contain too many grains. The division into breed food is completely arbitrary: in general, the needs of all cats are approximately the same. My sister gave her Maine Coon only Royal Canin dry food for Maine Coons, but this did not save the cat from age-related joint problems. However, for owners of unhealthy animals, choice is very important.

BrandVarieties of everyday foodTypes of preventive feedsTypes of veterinary feedsConclusion
Royal CaninAmong the daily diets, the following lines can be distinguished:
  1. Pedigree. They include several types of food for adult pets of different breeds: Maine Coon, British Shorthair, Siamese, Siberian, Bengal cats, etc.
  2. Age range for cats over 7 and 12 years old.
  3. Dietary. For active and sedentary animals.
  4. For picky animals who choose food depending on its composition, taste or smell.

The company offers a wide selection of dry and wet diets.

The corporation produces special food for the treatment of the following conditions:
  • overweight,
  • sensitive digestion,
  • oral diseases,
  • dermatological disorders,
  • increased formation of hairballs in the stomach and intestines.
Royal Canin produces food for the treatment of the following diseases:
  • pathologies of the kidneys and lower urinary tract,
  • urolithiasis disease,
  • dermatitis,
  • diabetes,
  • severe form of allergy.

There are several types of diets for cats with urolithiasis: for therapy during periods of sharp deterioration in health and for prevention. There are several flavor variations among foods for animals with chronic renal failure, which help maintain appetite.

In the case of everyday feed, the division is conditional. Among the positive aspects, one can note the presence of a large veterinary line.
Pro PlanThe line contains the following foods:
  • for older cats over 7 years old;
  • several varieties of everyday food: with salmon, chicken, turkey, lamb, tuna and duck;
  • dietary products with reduced or increased calorie content.

The company produces both dry and wet food. When choosing, you should take into account that diets with fish and dietary meats often contain poultry protein, which is absolutely not suitable for animals prone to allergies.

The preventive line consists of the following diets:
  • to improve the condition of the coat and skin,
  • for cats with sensitive digestion,
  • for spayed or neutered pets,
  • to maintain oral health.
The company produces animal feed with the following deviations:
  • diseases of the lower urinary tract and kidneys,
  • obesity,
  • allergy,
  • digestive disorders,
  • diabetes.

There is a special prebiotic supplement to normalize the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract.

The division of feed is quite arbitrary and more related to taste. Since the main claimed protein source may only contain as much as 4%, even picky cats may not be able to tell the difference. The veterinary line is smaller than the Royal Canin brand.

BrandEveryday feedPreventive feedVeterinary feedConclusion
Royal CaninMore than 10 varieties of food for different breeds. There are pates. There is food for animals over 8 and 10 years old and universal products. A special formula has been developed for picky dogs. There are diets for animals of different sizes. The company produces products for spayed or neutered animals, pregnant dogs, and pets with sensitive joints, skin, or digestion. There are diets with low and high calorie content. There are foods for dogs with the following diseases:
  • pathologies of the kidneys and lower urinary tract,
  • dermatitis,
  • disorders of the gastrointestinal tract,
  • pancreatic diseases,
  • heart failure,
  • liver failure,
  • diabetes,
  • obesity,
  • severe form of allergy.

The veterinary line includes both wet and dry food.

The veterinary diet is more varied, with more flavors represented. If we compare Royal Canin with Pro Plan, the former wins in terms of the number of pate varieties.
Pro PlanThe line includes dry food for mature and adult dogs, depending on their size and build. The company offers several flavor variations to choose from: beef, chicken, salmon and lamb. There is no wet food. Owners of allergic dogs should carefully check the composition. For example, food containing rice contains wheat and corn. There are foods for spayed and neutered dogs, for animals with sensitive digestion or skin, as well as products for maintaining oral health. There are diets for overweight and underweight companions. The line includes food for dogs with the following diseases:
  • renal failure,
  • increased sensitivity of joints,
  • brain disorders,
  • liver pathologies,
  • dermatitis,
  • obesity,
  • digestive disorders,
  • severe form of allergy.

Most food comes in pellet form, but there are several types of canned food. The company has also developed a prebiotic supplement.

Some dogs will like Pro Plan more because of the natural flavorings it contains.

Table: range of food "Proplan" and "Royal Canin" for kittens

BrandRangePeculiarities
Royal CaninThe manufacturer produces a powder analogue of cat's milk, a gentle mousse for kittens and dry food that can be given to babies over 1 month old and pregnant cats to replenish the deficiency of nutrients. Kittens older than 4–6 months can be given pouches and food with a relatively low content of vitamins, minerals and fats. This prevents the appearance of an overabundance of substances. There is a specialized diet for neutered kittens. The delicate texture of the mousse is well suited for small kittens and does not disturb digestion. Dry food granules for babies are easier to soak due to their porous structure.
Pro PlanThe line for kittens consists of 5 varieties of dry and wet food. Some foods are standard, others are suitable for babies with sensitive digestion. They contain turkey, but no chicken. The manufacturer includes cow's colostrum, which strengthens the immune system of babies.

BrandRangePeculiarities
Royal CaninThe company produces powdered milk replacer for small puppies. The line includes dry food for pregnant dogs and puppies of various sizes up to 2 months, as well as a gentle mousse. Mousse is preferable to soaked dry food, so when feeding Royal Canin products, owners can gradually adapt the gastrointestinal tract to the granules.
Pro PlanThe line consists of almost 20 varieties of dry food. There are no pates or spiders. There are products for puppies of different shapes and sizes, as well as diets for babies with sensitive digestion or dermatological problems. The food contains a special complex with cow's colostrum.

Composition of Royal Canin and Proplan feeds

Since the approach to treating diseases may vary from company to company, we will look at the formulations of everyday foods for dogs, cats, kittens and puppies. In general, you should not expect a big difference, since the products of both manufacturers belong to the premium class, that is, they are not of high quality and nutritional value. These brands of food contain preventive additives, but they are not the best. For example, yeast can cause digestive disorders if it is not brewer's yeast. The first positions are occupied by anonymous and dubious components. Pro Plan often indicates the main source of protein and its proportion, but given the presence of moisture in fresh meat, this amount is not enough.

Daily serving size

The serving size depends on the calorie content of the food. The smaller the recommended volume, the more nutritious the food. In the case of pouches and pates, the serving size will be larger because they contain moisture. It is advisable to take the recommended volume into account when comparing costs, since expensive, but nutritious diets may ultimately be more profitable than cheap, but low-calorie diets. The feeding schedule depends not so much on the type of food, but on the age of the pet, its state of health and the preferences of the owners, so we will not consider this item.

Royal Canin Composition

Royal Canin is cheaper than Pro Plan; almost everyone can buy it. There are often discounts on products in large pet stores, so you just want to grab a couple of packages while the promotion is going on. Before buying food, study its composition:

  1. The first place is occupied by plant protein isolate. The manufacturer states that these proteins are highly digestible and are specially selected for the production of feed.
  2. The second line reports the presence of dehydrated (dried) poultry proteins.
  3. At number three is rice, wheat is in fourth place.
  4. Animal fats complete the list.

Advantages and disadvantages

AdvantagesFlaws
  • accessibility and prevalence;
  • reasonable price;
  • the composition is enriched with vitamins and minerals;
  • a wide range, including specialized medicinal types;
  • is represented not only by dry granules, but also by canned varieties.
  • the composition is poorly specified, it is impossible to analyze it in detail;
  • There are no specific flavors or antioxidants listed.

Details about the composition

Is Royal Canin better than Proplan? Judging by the composition of the first one, it’s much worse. Let's figure out why French products are so bad. Can a good food have vegetable proteins in the first place? Some would say that they are a source of protein. Animal protein is ideal for cat nutrition, plant protein is not. Not only is it at the heart of the product, but the quantity is also hidden.

Dried poultry proteins. Where is the clarification of its type? Bird can mean chicken, hazel grouse or crow. The manufacturer kept silent about the species of the bird. As well as about the quantitative component of the declared proteins. According to veterinarians, this is a significant lack of food.

Rice and wheat are sources of carbohydrates, this is written above. Wheat is a cheap product, but filling. For products that are positioned as elite, such a filler is not suitable.

The cat receives the necessary fatty acids from the appropriate component of the food. Animal fats are located on the fifth line; they raise the same questions: what is the percentage component? What animals are we talking about? There is no answer; the manufacturer carefully hides information about this.

Which is better: Proplan or Royal Canin? Both foods are bad, but if there is no other choice, then American products are of better quality.

How to choose the best food, what should you pay attention to when buying it?

It is necessary to read on the front side of the package for whom the product is intended - a kitten, an adult animal, an elderly animal. On the reverse side there is information about the composition and nutritional content.

Be sure to read:
What kind of porridge can be given to cats and at what age
? You need to find out what percentage of meat and meat ingredients in the diet, what plant components and in what quantities are contained in the feed mixture. Conscientious manufacturers indicate which biologically active substances are added and in what quantities.

They inform you about it. what preservatives and antioxidants are included in the feed mixture. You should not purchase food that has no specific information about its composition.

Advantages of Pro Plan

We found out which food is better - Proplan or Royal Canin. Both brands are of poor quality, although they are expensive and are considered super-premium products.

Main advantages of Pro Plan:

  1. In first place is the chicken component.
  2. Varied choice.
  3. There are no problems with purchasing in regular and online pet stores.

Purina One cat food reviews

Customer Reviews

Nastya writes:

Hello to all owners of four-legged furry cats. Today I want to share a review about One food, which I recently came across. Usually they tried Brit Premium, and before that Royal Canin and Perfect Fit, but these are separate stories. So, one day I forgot to buy a new package of the usual food on time, and in the morning it turned out that there was nothing to feed the cat. Delivery from the online store is carried out only the next day after ordering, so I ran to the nearest supermarket to choose something temporary from what was available there.

The best thing was Purina's One food, it's certainly worse than Brit, but at least it's not Whiskas. The food has a pleasant aroma, small triangular granules, the price is very low (90 rubles per 200 g). Among the shortcomings, it is necessary to highlight the quality of raw materials and composition. Also, after this food, the smell from the cat’s toilet is more unpleasant than usual.

As for the cat’s reaction, he didn’t turn up his nose and ate no worse than usual. In general, I would not feed this food, except in unforeseen situations. I recommend that everyone who loves their pets buy premium food, and I recommend One food only to those who do not have the opportunity to buy more expensive professional food.

Irina writes:

About a month ago we started thinking about feeding our pet dry food; before that, we fed her “from the table” for almost 10 years. Recently, the stool has become a little thinner, so we added dry food to the diet. The most attractive composition turned out to be in Purina One, unlike Whiskas, meat and more vitamins come first here.

The cat eats the food with pleasure and drinks a lot of water after it. The stool has become more formed, no other problems are observed. True, we have not completely switched to dry food, in addition to it we give chicken breast, beef, liver, and fermented baked milk.

Many people write that dry food should not be mixed with natural food, but we have excellent results from such mixing. The cat's fur is soft and silky, and despite its age it is quite active. Therefore, we recommend this diet.

Elena writes:

Do not under any circumstances feed your pets this food, now I’ll tell you why. My cat only eats beef and fish from homemade food, so I have to feed her dry food. I always took Leonardo Adult 32/16, but due to financial problems I had to save even on a cat. So I bought Purina One.

The cat liked this food, she ate well, but trouble happened - after a week I noticed that the cat was going to the toilet less and less. I thought maybe it was because of the change in food that everything would soon return to normal, but the constipation only got worse, the cat basically only walked once every couple of days!

As a treatment, I fed her some raw meat, and when the constipation went away, she went back to her previous food. Now everything is normal. I recommend Leonardo food and do not recommend Purina One food.

Pros of Royal Canin food

We researched which food is better - Proplan or Royal Canin. The advantages and disadvantages of the first have been sorted out. As for the second, its advantage is its rich assortment. The manufacturer offers food for:

  • kittens and nursing cats;
  • adult pets;
  • cats leading an active lifestyle;
  • products are manufactured taking into account the needs of a particular breed;
  • there is a veterinary (medicinal) series of feeds;
  • You can purchase food for castrated and sterilized cats.

Veterinary ruler

In addition to the everyday diets that were discussed above, these manufacturers have veterinary products with a more attractive composition, high digestibility and a narrower purpose. Here you will find excellent hypoallergenic food, food for dogs and cats with various diseases and special needs. Depending on the purpose, such food can be given to animals in courses or throughout their entire life.

Comparative characteristics

We found out which food is better: Proplan or Royal Canin. If we compare the products, the conclusions are as follows:

  1. Pro Plan contains chicken, which significantly outperforms its French competitor.
  2. There are no flavoring additives in American food.
  3. Proplan contains a protein component.

A comparison of Proplan and Royal Canin reveals clear advantages of the first.

Price policy

The pricing policy of all three brands is quite loyal. Of course, this is due to the presence of cost-reducing components in the diet (more on them a little later), but every animal owner can choose the most suitable food that will not “tighten the pocket”, but will provide the animal with all the necessary substances and keep it in good shape.

At Royal Canin, the average price for a package of food weighing 0.5 kg is 263 rubles, for 0.8 kg - 314 rubles, for 3 kg - 1003 rubles, for 12 kg - 3744 rubles.

At Hills, the average price for 0.8 kg is 395 rubles, for a 3 kg package – 1372 rubles, for 12 kg – 4578 rubles.

At Purina, 0.7 kg packages cost the same, regardless of the purpose of the food, and the price for them is 325 rubles. The average cost of a package weighing 3 kg is 1125 rubles, and for a 12 kg package you will have to pay 4225 rubles (only food for older dogs of medium and large breeds costs a little more). The cost of diets from the Duo Delice series is slightly higher.

Important! Prices are calculated for the period of writing the article and may change in one direction or another over time. Therefore, here, rather, it is worth focusing not on a specific figure, but on the general pricing policy of a particular manufacturer. In addition, the price of packages of the same weight, but for different purposes, even within the same manufacturer, may differ significantly. And the packaging itself does not completely duplicate each other, somewhere there are smaller packages, somewhere larger, and here everyone chooses the most suitable option.

In general, the conclusion is that Royal Canin food is slightly cheaper than its competitors.

Reviews

Pet owners are divided into two camps. Some are delighted with the food in question, others are shocked.

Here's what they say about Proplan:

  1. Cats eat with pleasure.
  2. Gives animals a rich color.
  3. Waste is minimal and has virtually no odor.
  4. Other felines refuse food.
  5. Causes allergic reactions.

Reviews of Royal Canin look like this:

  1. Fairly fatty food.
  2. Cats eat it up.
  3. Many pets ask for supplements; the food is tasty for them.
  4. Owners point out the unpleasant odor emanating from the products.
  5. Others talk about small granules that create inconvenience for pets.
  6. The color of cats changes for the worse.
  7. There is a lot of excrement, but there is no particularly strong smell.

What is the best food to feed your dog?

If the animal is healthy, then you can choose any of the compared brands of food that is suitable for the pet’s age and breed size.

For animals suffering from certain ailments, veterinarians primarily recommend medicated diets from Royal Canin.

In addition, some animals refuse food for various reasons (they may not like the size or shape of the pellets, or the taste or smell of the food). And also in rare cases, individual intolerance to certain components of the diet appears. Therefore, in any case, when switching to a new food, the owner must carefully monitor the dog’s condition and appetite.

Summing up

Having examined the compositions of feeds, their advantages and disadvantages, we boldly declare:

  1. The product is of poor quality and is far from super-premium class.
  2. The price category is unreasonably high; overpaying for wheat, vegetable proteins and rice is a thankless task.
  3. Judging by the reviews, owners prefer the American food Pro Plan. And this despite the fact that most doctors at veterinary clinics recommend Royal Canin.

Comparison of the quality of the composition of two brands

When figuring out which of the two brands is of better quality and preferable for purchase, you need to pay attention to the composition. Both companies have different lines, but one problem repeats itself: the quality of the main component leaves much to be desired.

ProPlanRoyal Canin
Meat takes first place when listing the components of ProPlan. The company uses chicken, salmon, beef, lamb or even turkey. But along with pure fillet, by-products (skins, ground bones and other harmful ingredients) can be added to the feed. The Royal Canin company most often bases its diets on chicken meat. There are varieties of food with red meat (for example, beef, pork or veal). Criticism of the food is related precisely to the quality of the product: it is subjected to serious chemical processing.
ProPlan uses wheat, rice or corn as a source of protein and amino acids important for dogs. But their location in the list of food ingredients indicates that there are too many plant components. The source of complex carbohydrates is considered to be brewer's rice grains, whole grain rice, and corn. All of them are cheap and low quality components that serve as filler for the dog’s stomach.
According to veterinarians, additional sources of protein are also not of high quality. In ProPlan they are dehydrated chicken proteins, which can cause side effects, including allergies. Royal Canin adds chicken fat with concentrated Omega-6 acid or beet pulp to the feed. Alternative protein sources include wheat gluten, corn flour and fructooligosaccharides.
Purina ProPlan uses controversial ingredients that can cause addiction in dogs. This significantly complicates a potential transition to a new food. The company uses flavor enhancers, dyes, and flavors that attract animals.
