Suspension and tablets for helminths Prazitel: instructions for use

Save the article:
To combat helminths in cats, special antiparasitic medications are used. Among the popular products, the combination drug Prazitel stands out. Its use is justified by its high efficiency, relative harmlessness and the possibility of use for different age groups of pets. Prazitel for cats is recommended by veterinarians and tested in practice over a long period.

Release form and composition

The chemical composition of the drug Prazitel was developed by scientists from SKiFF LLC. The issue is handled by another Moscow company. The active ingredients of the anthelmintic drug are praziquantel and pyrantel pamoate. Their concentrations and ratios depend on the form of the drug and the purpose by age. The medicine is effective against mature worms and larvae. The drug is marketed in two forms: suspension (Prazitel suspension) and tablets (Prazitel tabulettae). Both are intended for oral use.

Prazitel suspension

The liquid form is made in the form of a thick solution of a light cream or yellowish tint. Bottles with Prasitel suspension for cats have different volumes: 5, 10 and 15 ml. The bottles are made of dark glass or plastic. 1 ml of medicine contains 3 mg of praziquantel and 30 mg of pyrantel. The suspension may separate over time; this is considered normal. To restore homogeneity, shake the container before use.

Along with the usual suspension, the manufacturer produces Prazitel Special. This variety is intended for older pets, that is, for those over 6 years old. The composition includes R-praziquantel, which has a gentler effect on the cat’s body. In addition, additional components of the suspension include inulin and silybin. The first improves the activity of intestinal microflora, the second restores liver cells.

Prazitel suspension is stored away from sunlight at room temperature (from 0 to 25 degrees).

Prazitel tablets

Externally, you can distinguish the tablet form from its analogues by its greenish-yellow color. Each Prasitel tablet weighs 0.32 grams and is marked with the “PR” logo. The packaging of the drug includes an even number of capsules: 2, 4, 6, 8 or 10 pieces. It is allowed to pack tablets in metallized blisters or laminated paper. The authentic drug is placed in cardboard boxes.

The amount of praziquantel in one tablet is 20 mg, pyrantel pamoate - 200 mg. To improve the organoleptic and physicochemical properties, in addition to the active components, Prazitel tablets include excipients: potato starch (10 g), lactose (80 g), gelatin (0.9 g), croscarmellose sodium (6 g), calcium stearate ( 3.1 g). Prazitel tabulettae, intended for kittens, has a lower concentration of active ingredients. The amount of praziquantel in such a tablet is reduced to 5 g, and pyrantel - to 50 g.

Where to buy, how to store, price

The drug Prazitel is available for free sale in specialized retail outlets for animals (vet pharmacies, pet stores). It's inexpensive:

Prazitel is characterized by a fairly wide spectrum of action. Praziquantel and pyrantel are poisons not only for roundworms, but also for tapeworms. The use of suspension and tablets is advisable for:

  • toxocariasis;
  • toxascariasis;
  • uncinarium;
  • hookworm;
  • ascariasis;
  • trichocephalosis;
  • taeniidoze;
  • dipylidia;
  • echinococcosis;
  • diphyllobothriasis;
  • mesocestoidosis.

Praziquantel (up to 75%) and partially pyrantel (up to 50%) are absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract of the cat. Already 3 hours after administration, the maximum of these compounds is reached in the animal’s blood. Praziquantel is excreted from the body in metabolized form in the urine. Pyrantel is excreted in the feces. The body is freed from poisons after 48 hours. During this time, the active molecules of the drug manage to cause the death of worms.

The active compounds of Prazitel penetrate the bodies of helminths and inactivate fumarate reductase, an enzyme involved in the transmission of nerve impulses to muscle fibers. As a result, the parasite experiences static paralysis. Immobilized worms and the decay products of their bodies are excreted from the gastrointestinal tract with feces.

Indications for use

Prazitel is recommended not only for the prevention, but also for the treatment of helminthiases. This drug works effectively for the following types of invasions:

  • toxascariasis;
  • hookworm;
  • echinococcosis;
  • uncinarium;
  • mesocestoidosis;
  • diphyllobothriasis.

All these diseases cause significant harm to the health of both the pet and the owner. The risk of infection for humans is very high. Therefore, it is important to carry out timely preventive measures to protect against helminths.

Instructions for use of Prazitel

Anthelmintic treatment is repeated every three months and 10-12 days before scheduled vaccination. To achieve the desired result, Prazitel for deworming is fed to the cat in the morning on an empty stomach (optimally an hour before meals). According to the instructions, a special diet in the form of a hunger strike and laxatives are not necessary.

The tablets can be given in several ways. In the first option, it is placed entirely in a piece of sausage or meat. Often, owners grind the tablet into powder and mix it with minced fish or meat. Learn more about how to give your cat a pill. If the cat smells the medicine and refuses to swallow the product, it is worth using an introducer. The Prazitel suspension is measured out to the cat with a syringe without a needle and squeezed onto the root of the tongue.

If the deworming regimen is interrupted, the course is resumed at the standard dosage without increasing the number of tablets or suspension.

Directions for use and dose calculation

The dosage of the drug is selected individually, taking into account the age and weight of the animal. For kittens, Prazitel suspension, according to the instructions, is recommended to be given only with a syringe to prevent an overdose, or to purchase the appropriate tablets.

The instructions for use also prohibit the use of tablets and suspension for kittens less than three weeks old.

Pharmacological properties

An anthelmintic is used to combat internal parasites of various types. Its special feature is its triple effect on worms. It has a negative effect on parasites, regardless of their stage of development and type, thanks to three active components:

  1. Praziquantel helps increase the permeability of cell membranes. They become permeable to calcium, and excessive accumulation of this element in the cells leads to muscle contraction. This is usually accompanied by convulsions, and then leads to paralysis and death.
  2. Pyrantel pamoate disrupts the functioning of the nervous system. Due to the depolarization of nerve connections, the transmission of nerve impulses becomes impossible, which also subsequently leads to the death of the parasites.
  3. Fenbendazole is different in that it affects not only adults, but also larvae and eggs. Its effect is to disrupt energy metabolism, as a result of which ATP is not synthesized. Under the influence of the substance, the worms die.

From the gastrointestinal tract, active substances are quickly absorbed into the blood and distributed throughout the body. The components are excreted for no more than 2 days along with feces and urine.

If the classic dose is observed, the product does not cause teratogenic, mutagenic, sensitizing, embryo- and immunotoxic effects in cats. Clinical trials of the drug confirm the absence of significant side effects. In cases of overdose or individual sensitivity to an anthelmintic, the pet may experience some unpleasant symptoms:

  • weakness;
  • loss of appetite;
  • nausea;
  • vomit;
  • salivation;
  • convulsions.

When feeding Prazitel to a kitten, especially for the first time, it is recommended to be especially careful. If you notice a change in your health, you should contact a veterinarian

Sources of infection

For helminths, the body of a cat or a person is both a home and food at the same time. Worms feed on the tissues and blood of their host, simultaneously poisoning him and causing a whole bunch of painful symptoms. And if left untreated or treated incorrectly, helminths become deadly. There are many sources of infection and it is difficult to completely eliminate them from an animal’s life, here are the main ones:

  • contact with an infected cat or dog;
  • raw meat or fish;
  • eaten by rodents or street birds;
  • infected insects (mosquitoes, fleas, flies);
  • soil or sand in which there were worm eggs;
  • a person who brought helminth eggs from the street on clothes or shoes;
  • intrauterine infection or mother cat's milk.

An infected animal becomes dangerous for nearby people, especially for children who constantly play with cats and often have immunity problems. Transmission of helminths from pet to person is possible in several ways:

  • when cleaning the tray;
  • When playing or stroking a cat, worm eggs remain on the skin. If you don't wash your hands, you can become infected;
  • helminth eggs can remain anywhere in the apartment where the cat was: on the sofa, chair, human lap, and so on;
  • through saliva. Although this is contrary to basic hygiene rules, many owners do not hold back their emotions and show love for the cat by kissing it.

Prazitel's analogues

If for some reason Prazitel is not suitable for the cat or it is not available in the veterinary pharmacy, you can use analogues. Suitable alternative replacements:

  • Milbemax. A more expensive French remedy, which contains milbemycin and praziquantel. Due to the flavoring, the tablets have the smell of meat.
  • Drontal. German tablet analogue with a composition identical to Prazitel. The difference is the higher cost.
  • Dirofen plus. Russian-made tablets and pastes that contain febantel in addition to praziquantel and pyrantel. The price is more favorable.

  • Azinox. The tablets produced by the Russian company consist only of praziquantel. The price category is the same as the previous product.

Reviews from pet owners

Prazitel gave it to the cat once. The worms came out within a few days. There were no side effects. The male easily swallowed the tablet on his own during breakfast. The advantage of Prazitel is that during the treatment period you do not need to follow a diet.

Artem, 32 years old

The children brought home a little kitten. For prevention, we decided to give him an anthelmintic. Since we were afraid that the kitten would choke on the pill, we bought Prasitel suspension. It is easily dosed due to the presence of a dosing syringe, which is supplied by the manufacturer to the jar of suspension. We selected the dose calculation according to the instructions, taking into account the approximate weight of the kitten.

Arina, 28 years old

Our little fluffy kitten was prescribed Prazitel in tablets for deworming. The doctor selected the dose, taking into account the weight, 1 tablet per 4 kg. Since our pet is small, we gave 1 tablet. There were no side effects after or during treatment.

Ekaterina, 24 years old

There is a cat living in the country.
To remove infestations, we bought Prasitel. Since his weight exceeds 4 kg, they gave him one and a half tablets once a day. Taking the drug does not imply following a starvation diet. It also does not require prescribing laxatives to your pet.

Precautions and hygiene rules

During treatment with anthelmintic drugs, it is very important to observe the necessary safety precautions:

  1. You should wash your hands thoroughly after using the drug.
  2. Do not eat, drink or smoke while using medications.
  3. If Prazitel gets into your eyes, you should immediately rinse them with plenty of cool water.
  4. Used vials cannot be stored.

Use with other drugs

It is strictly forbidden to combine Prazitel with other anthelmintic drugs.

Because if the concentration of praziquantel in the cat’s body is exceeded, its condition will greatly worsen. For example, convulsions, tremors, loss of coordination, and hypothermia may occur.
